We're often asked which is best: hot 'vitreous' enamelling, or cold enamelling using resin.  There's no quick answer - personally, I prefer 'proper' vitreous enamelling, because it has a long and fine tradition behind it, and produces a very long-lasting finish.  However, some colours can be troublesome to produce in enamel on silver (especially reds and yellows), and require the use of gold foil and/or special fluxes underneath.

Using resin to mimic the look of enamel can work, providing thought's given to the design, and can give you vivid and true reds and yellows quickly and easily.

We teach both methods of adding colour to your jewellery here at the Sussex Jewellery School:  see the Adding Colour section in 'View & Book Courses', where you'll find details of our next Enamelling on Fine Silver and resin courses.
