Enamelling on Fine Silver with Amanda Zoe, 6-7 October 2012

In stock

£255.00

Design and make your own solid silver jewellery using hallmark-quality mouldable silver clay... then discover how to use modern transparent vitreous (hot) enamels to add vivid transparent colour, on this 2-day Enamelling on Fine Silver course.  And what's more, the course fee includes silver and enamelling materials to make several projects!

Forget traditional opaque enamelling on copper of the sort popular in the 1970s - with this course, you'll learn how to achieve clear depths of jewel-like colours through which the underlying fine silver textures and patterns can be seen.  Yummy!

Taught by Sarah Jane Whittaker MCSJ Dip MC and Sussex Guild jeweller and enameller Amanda Zoe, over just one weekend you will learn the individual steps needed to produce modern enamelled fine silver jewellery, using easier-to-use mouldable pure silver, and transparent coloured jewellery enamels in an array of transparent colours including Mediterranean blues, oranges, greens, teals, browns, greys and lilacs - and a new 'magic' yellow!

This course is suitable for beginners, beaders and for students with some experience of working with mouldable metal 'clay':  it's an ideal follow-on to our Beginnings in Silver 1-day introductory course, but also fine if you've never made jewellery before!  More experienced students will be encouraged to design their own projects with the tutor's advice, and may wish to purchase extra materials to make more items.

Techniques covered over the 2 day-course:

  • Basic silver clay techniques (if needed)
  • Designing and making metal clay jewellery 'blanks' with cells that will take enamels correctly
  • Designing and making silver clay domed and flat pieces with textures to show under transparent enamels
  • Hot connection considerations when enamelling
  • Firing, cooling and burnishing metal clay for enamelling
  • Preparing metal clay blanks for enamelling
  • Use of enamelling solder
  • Washing enamels for optimum clarity of colours
  • Wet-packing
  • Dry sifting
  • Firing enamels with a torch and kiln
  • Grinding back
  • Flash-firing
  • Basic cloisonne enamelling with fine silver wire will also be shown.

The course fee includes:

    * two full days' tuition (10am-5pm with 1 hour's break for lunch)
    * a choice of top quality transparent jewellery enamels
    * the use of all tools needed
    * hard or enamelling solder needed for your projects
    * a reasonable amount of mouldable silver (PMC3 or Art Clay), worth almost £45
    * Jump rings and ear-stud backs, to complete your projects.

Additional PMC3 or Art Clay, and sterling silver findings (brooch backs, pendant chains, keyrings etc) may be available to purchase at reasonable cost from your tutor during the course, if needed, so why not make yourself a colourful pendant and some enamelled stud earrings?  Or create enamelled charms for a charm bracelet, or an enamelled brooch?  The choices are endless!
